Winters Community Library

As Yolo County’s first joint-use library, the Winters Library is a major hub for community events, activities, and gatherings. While functioning as a public library, it is also designed to be the school library for Winters High School. The open floor plan maintains clear zoning separations between the public dedicated areas by use of subtle differentiation of character.

The client’s sustainable design values drove primary design decisions. The building form responds to site orientation to gain the optimum advantage in reducing solar heat impact. Lehmberg carried sustainability through to the details, selecting light-colored materials for roofing shingles and site paving to minimize heat gain. Maybe the most intriguing sustainability technology included, thermal ice-storage cooling systems utilize night temperatures and off-peak rates to lower operating costs.
