Michael Lehmberg, Architect
Fairway Canyon Aquatic Center,
also known as The Canyon Club
“There’s no denying that life at The Fairways has its privileges. One of the most notable is the Canyon Club, a 10,000-square-foot venue that feels less like a recreation center and more like a private resort. A sense of modern luxury fills the gracious interior, as residents and invited guests freely enjoy a wealth of amenities that include everything from a state-of-the-art fitness center with cardio machines and free weights, to dining and meeting rooms, to a refined Member Lounge. Just outside, families can get their fill of fun enjoying an expansive aquatics center featuring a resort-style pool, junior Olympic lap-swimming pool, kids splash park, shaded picnic area, children’s play area, and more. From relaxing poolside to getting in the best shape of your life, to hosting a five-star event, everything you want or need is right here for you at The Canyon Club.” - The Fairways
To elevate the rec building concept to a resort feel, Lehmberg exposed wood structural roof trusses, included large scale window walls, and highlighted various building elements with plaster and stone. Lehmberg notes, “The distinct architectural character is derived from combining the directives of strict building style guidelines with the dynamic plan and section configurations.” This is especially seen in the exterior forms that overlap interior spaces and gesture out to the surrounding recreation center complex outdoor spaces. The club won the Gold Nugget Award for Best Public / Private Recreational Use Facility in 2007.
